Buy a French door for what it does to a room, not for what it does to a number. The code gives it a looser air leakage allowance than a slider, which means the manufacturer has to earn less, which means you have to specify more.

The amount of glass in your front door decides which code table it gets rated from, and that decides whether the door helps your job or quietly damages it. Almost nobody is told this before they choose one.
Window Screens and Screen Doors
Screens are the one part of this job the energy code has no opinion about, and that is genuinely useful rather than a throwaway line. A screen is not fenestration, it is not rated, and it sits outside the NFRC test that produces your U-factor.

Do replacement windows have to meet the energy code in Vancouver, Washington?
Yes. Section R503.1.1.1 of the 2021 Washington State Energy Code says that where an existing fenestration unit is replaced with a new fenestration product including sash and glazing, the replacement has to hit the U-factor and the solar heat gain figures set out in Table R402.1.3. For Clark County that means a maximum U-factor of 0.30 for vertical fenestration.
What is the area-weighted average and why does it matter to my quote?
The same section allows that where more than one replacement unit is being installed, an area-weighted average of all the replacement fenestration may be used to demonstrate compliance. In plain terms, a run of good casements can carry a bay or a large patio door. It also means the openings you group into one order change what you are allowed to buy, which is why we ask about phasing before we ask about colour.
Does Washington require a particular solar heat gain coefficient?
Table R402.1.3 sets a U-factor for vertical fenestration and gives no SHGC figure for it at all. Washington is a heating-dominated state and the code reflects that. So the low-SHGC triple-silver glass sold hard across the Southwest buys you nothing on compliance here, and on a south wall in winter it costs you free solar gain. Is my house in a wind-borne debris region that needs impact windows?
No. Footnote j to Table R402.1.3 gives a looser 0.32 U-factor above 4,000 feet in elevation or in wind-borne debris regions where opening protection is required. Vancouver sits at roughly fifty feet on the Columbia and is in neither category. Laminated glass here is worth buying for forced-entry resistance, road and rail noise and ultraviolet, not for storms.
Can I just replace the foggy glass instead of the whole window?
Often, yes, and it is usually the better job. The replacement fenestration rules are triggered when the unit including sash and glazing is replaced. Setting a new insulated glass unit into a sound existing sash is a repair, so no U-factor demonstration is required. We check the frame, the sill and the hardware first and tell you which one you are actually looking at.
